Southern Utah Engineering Firm Strives to Make a Difference in Housing
Our owner and CEO Tim Watson is known for taking action. And this goes beyond leading Watson Engineering client projects. A key mission of the company is to actively participate and give back to our community.
One of Watson’s many outreach projects came after Tim read an article in The Spectrum and Daily News. The article described Rebekah, a divorced mother receiving services from a local crisis center in recovery from an abusive relationship. Her dream for the future was to build a home that would be a safe haven for her and her son.
Rebekah’s story made an impact on Tim. And, he was further inspired by learning about a senior Engineering Technology student at Southern Utah University, Dustin Gale, who had donated his time and talents to design the future home. Dustin had worked side-by-side with Rebekah utilizing his skills and the university’s software programs to design plans, including a 3D modeling of the new home. These plans included plenty of windows offering her a light filled home that she desired. Rebekah described her excitement of working with Dustin in working towards the home she had only hoped for since receiving a prior loan approval.
Tim quickly realized there was the ability to help take Rebekah’s dream to the next level in the construction process. This is when Watson Engineering joined forces with Dustin by donating the structural engineering plans. Project Engineer, Kyle Kump, and Design Drafter, Colin Campbell, went to work with Dustin to deliver a full set of structural engineering plans.
The team recognized Dustin’s good work as a student designer, not only for his design work but also for donating his own time and resources to help a member of the community. And as for Rebekah, she now has a full set of plans to take to any contractor and they will have all the information they need to build her house.
