Kyle Kump, EIT, MSI, CWI - Structural Project Engineer/Special Inspector

Kyle Kump began his career 14 years ago as an engineering technician in California. While working as a special inspector for structural construction projects, he was drawn to the design of those same structures he was overseeing for development. Because of that, he enrolled at Utah State University and graduated in 2015 with a degree in civil engineering. Shortly after graduating, Kyle found a job at Watson Engineering and is a member of the firm’s structural engineering team.

What’s a typical day like for Kyle? Known for his great organization and communication skills, it’s no surprise to learn he begins every day with a team meeting to go over current and new projects and discuss assignments.

Then he gets to work designing the structural systems for future and active projects. “Some days I make site visits to perform various special inspections at construction sites,” describes Kyle, “or I make structural observations at homes or buildings that may have structural issues.” He wraps up the day by finishing up any designs he can or working on reports for inspections and/or structural observations.

One of Kyle’s favorite projects was Libertad Apartments, an affordable housing community in Cedar City. “These are the largest building I’ve ever provided structural design and plans for,” shares Kyle. And once construction began, he was on the job site to perform all the special inspections. “That’s just one of the benefits of engaging our full-service firm,” he explains. “We can perform the work in-house; we all function and participate in each project.”

In addition to residential projects, Kyle also provides structural designs and plans for commercial and municipal projects using a wide variety of materials including concrete, wood, steel, and masonry.

When he’s not at work, Kyle enjoys competing in races and spending time with his wife and dog. He also served six years in the United States Marine Corps.
